Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. Their popularity really took off in the 1970s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in 1908 at a British dog show. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Majoribanks bred the now-extinct “Yellow Retriever” with Irish Water Spaniels, Irish Setters, and Bloodhounds to create the Golden Retriever. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. But once you’re settled. The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since 1925 and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. If you truly want a high energy dog to do all those things, a toller could be a good fit. Are you able to afford that and another similar amount for agility and pool rental fees for dock diving and another $200 for flyball? Will you actually have time for that while going to college and working? I hate to discourage dog sports but I see far too many people who want a breed to do all the things, get a high energy high drive breed and then realize “crap, there’s no lessons close by, and it’s sure expensive” and then they do nothing with the dog. For example, my obedience classes are $200/month, that’s pretty average. Which are available in your area? Which have lessons that work with your schedule? And can you afford them? Dog sports are expensive and time consuming. I would also suggest that you seriously look into what sports you can actually do. If you get a dog to do “all the things” and then leave it with your parents, are they also going to do all the things? If not, it would be best to either consider a breed that fits their lifestyle or to wait on getting a dog.
